Around The Fireplace

The table has newspapers and magazines from a recent time, arranged like they are arranged in interior design shoots, but better because that’s the way they look after someone was reading actually something and then laid it aside to pick something else up, as opposed to attempting to achieve that look for a photograph. They are distributed liberally on the low table, competing for space with a Scrabble board and a pot of tea with accompanying tea cups bearing literary motifs. There is a bottle of red wine and a pair of glasses which shine with clean, true, promise – the potential which only empty wine glasses in close proximity to a bottle of wine can bear. And the window is wide. It shows a full, beautiful wintry vision of white, covering the earth and wrapping around the tree branches, and spreading its misty whiteness over all. In the fireplace the flames are steady and golden and there is the pop and phut and crackle. Logs move and the dogs look up from their sleepy positions around the screen. The lounge is comfortable and deep and we have our shoes off and are sitting together and looking at the views inner and outer and cannot decide which we like better.
